Worship Assistants

The gifts He gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11–12
At baptism, all the children of God are given the privilege and responsibility to participate in Worship rather than just be spectators. There are many ways in which we can participate during Worship. If you would like to sign up to assist with worship in any role please email april@firstluthbd.org

Below are the lessons and prayers of the day for the month. They are also available on the table in front of the church office.

NEED A SUB?

If you are not able to assist during the Sunday you are scheduled, please reach out to other volunteers on the list above and contact April.

MINISTER ASSISTANT
As an assistant minister you are helping lead worship and distributing the Eucharist to the congregation of First Lutheran Church. They are someone who is mature in their faith, comfortable in front of a group, able to read well and be heard clearly, and carry themselves with dignity and a calm presence. The Assisting Minister leads the prayer of the day, prayers of intercession, and offertory prayer.

LAY READER
Scripture itself tells us that God’s Word is living and active. Lay readers serve an important role to God and the Church as one who reads the Scripture lessons during the worship services. You proclaim the word of God. One of the results of the Reformation was to make scripture accessible again to all the people of God. This is demonstrated publicly by having the first and second readings proclaimed by laypeople. “People encounter the word of God in a different way when it is proclaimed to the gathered assembly than when it is read privately. Despite ongoing changes in the ways people communicate, public reading of scripture remains foundational to proclamation within the assembly. The act of reading and receiving the word is a sign of a people called and gathered by God.”

USHER
Ushering is an opportunity to serve God by serving His people, and is a marvelous way to actively and faithfully participate in the functioning of First Lutheran Church. Ushers make people coming into the church feel welcome and appreciated, in doing so they contribute greatly to making everyone’s church experience a positive one. As they welcome God’s people to worship and give them a bulletin, Ushers ensure that everyone is able to participate in the service. They are attentive to the service and ensure all guest and members needs are respectfully handled, assist and direct seating, and during communion, direct the orderly flow of communicants.

COMMUNION ASSISTANT
Our communion assistants are an extension of the table of our Lord. They are gracious and graceful, caring for this meal as something both precious and familiar. The primary duty of the communion assistant is to serve the wine to each communicant. Ideally, communion assistants represent the whole people of God: young and old, male and female, all races and ethnicities, people with disabilities, newer members of the congregation and long-time leaders of the parish.
